November IHLS Board Meeting

The next IHLS Board meeting is Tuesday, November 27, 2012. IHLS Board meetings will be available via VTEL at each of our four offices as well as the Illinois State Library. If you are not able to join us in Effingham, perhaps one of these other locations will be more convenient. When available, you will find the November agenda and board packet here.

 

IHLS Staff Changes

We have several staff additions and changes to celebrate.  
 
Rose Mary BarczewskiRose Mary Barczewski recently joined our staff as the new Chief Financial Officer and will be based in the Edwardsville office. Rose Mary has a B.S. in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. She has over 22 years of experience in the accounting field (including governmental and fund accounting) and 17 years of supervisory experience.  
 

 

 

 

 

 
Ellen PopitEllen Popit has accepted the part-time position of Grants Director, working primarily with the Illinois Machine Sub-Lending Agency and WebJunction Illinois projects. Her membership responsibilities will remain unchanged, and to recognize her combined duties Ellen’s new title is Membership and Grants Director.
 
 

 

 

 

 

Cassie JonesCassie Jones is now an Operations Assistant at the Carterville Office. Cassie was previously a part-time Courier Driver.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

New Courier Drivers:

Edward Thompson and Daryl Sutton joined IHLS as part-time courier drivers at the Carterville location; Jeremy Dailey is a back-up courier driver at the Carterville location; and Steven Woosley is a part-time courier driver at the Edwardsville location.

IHLS offices closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22 & 23

Just a reminder that all IHLS offices will be closed and delivery will not operate Thursday, November 22nd and Friday, November 23rd, for the Thanksgiving holiday. 

All four will reopen November 26th, and additional delivery routes may run to compensate for volume.

 

Call for Nominations - ILA Intellectual Freedom Award

Presented by the ILA Intellectual Freedom Committee and Quality Books, Inc., the Intellectual Freedom Award honors an individual or group for outstanding contributions in defending intellectual freedom or the advancement of these principles as espoused and promulgated by both the Illinois Library Association and the American Library Association.

The recipient will receive a $500 financial award and certificate.

All  Illinois school, academic, special, and public libraries, as well as, Illinois Library Systems, ILA and its forums and committees are encouraged to submit a nomination.  Any other Illinois group or individual may also submit nominations.

To submit a nomination, complete the nomination form, follow all the submission instructions, and attach all support statements, letters, and documentation, etc. required by the award’s criteria.  ILA must receive all nominations by May 15.  http://www.ila.org/awards/intellectual-freedom-award

ILEAD USA Applications Videoconference Nov.19

ILEAD USA Applications Available — Illinois Videoconference November 19

The State Library will host ILEAD USA (Innovative Librarians Explore, Apply and Discover): The 21st Century Technology and Leadership Skills Institute for the States at the University of Illinois Springfield on March 25–28, June 17–20 and October 21–24, 2013.

The ILEAD USA initiative, begun in 2009 by Illinois as ILEAD U, has now been propagated to partner states Colorado, Iowa, Ohio and Utah.

Do you have a technology skill or knowledge of technology tools? Be an instructor!  Want to learn?  Be a participant!  We are accepting applications for PARTICIPANTS, INSTRUCTORS, and MENTORS, until December 14 at http://www.webjunction.org/partners/illinois/il-programs/ileadusa.html.

Upcoming IHLS Closures

IHLS offices will be closed Monday, November 12 for Veteran's Day and delivery will not run that day. Extra routes will run on Tuesday, November 13 if needed.
 
IHLS offices will also be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 22-23 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Extra routes will run on Monday and Tuesday, November 26-27.

IHLS has received several installments for the FY2012 Area and Per Capita Grant in the amount of $1,460,666.66.
 
We at IHLS truly appreciate the support of our colleagues at the Illinois State Library, Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White, and our dedicated board and staff.

Illinois Library Laws and Rules

In September IHLS coordinated a group purchase of the latest edition of Illinois Library Laws & Rules (2012) for $20/copy. The books have arrived and we are currently in the process of getting the books  mailed out to the libraries that requested them. An invoice will be in the package with the books. If your library requested books and you have not received them by Friday, November 16, please contact Linda Petty at 618.656.3216, ext. 412.

Courses available at University of Illinois GSLIS

If you already have your master's in library and information science, do you want to expand your knowledge and skills on current topics in LIS such as digital libraries and data mining, or do you need to update or fill in gaps in your LIS education? Perhaps you just miss the classroom environment?  If so, consider registering for a graduate credit course as a non-degree student at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. 

Do you know someone with a bachelor's degree who might be interested in pursuing a master's degree in LIS and would like to explore the field by taking a course or two? If so, encourage them to register for a graduate credit course as a non-degree student at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Admission to the university is not required.

IHLS had an incredible maiden year, and we have much to anticipate and realize in the future. A lot of hard work, long hours, and multitude of meetings were responsible for the success of the first year in joining our four organizations into one. The IHLS Fact Sheet highlights IHLS services and successes for FY2012.

Live and Learn Construction Grant Workshops

Staff from the Illinois State Library will provide an overview of the Live & Learn Construction Grant Program for public libraries. These sessions will discuss the eligibility requirements, the three different grant categories available, and the application submission and review process. Applications are due January 11, 213.
