REQUIRED Annual Library Certification Continues

During the second week of the Annual Library Certification process, more than 500 libraries have submitted their online forms. Remember that this is a requirement for any current full or developmental system member library. The online form is available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/libraries/librarycertification.html.

The Annual Certification Process is required for all library system members to qualify for system services and programs/services from the Illinois State Library. The window for this certification began January 2 and will be open through March 31, 2013. Questions about the process should be emailed to ISL Library Development Group at isl_certify@ilsos.net.

GSLIS IL offers an intensely practical introduction to the design and construction of library buildings.
 
LIS 548, Library Buildings,  is aimed in particular at librarians who are faced with structural problems or who are facing space planning, remodeling, or new construction. The course places particular emphasis on the problems that occur in the design and construction of libraries and how these can be avoided.

Jesse White Visits Rochester Public Library

Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White visited the Rochester Public Library, meeting with staff and patrons and taking a tour of the library.  He presented the library with the "2012 Commitment to Community" Award.

Upcoming IHLS Closures

IHLS offices will be closed on Monday, December 24, and Tuesday, December 25, in observance of Christmas. Delivery and Talking Book Services will not be provided. Extra routes will run on Wednesday and Thursday, if needed.

On the Front Lines Conference Returns — Survey Available

The State Library’s popular “On the Front Lines” conference will return August 5-7, 2013 at the University of Illinois Springfield. “On the Front Lines” is designed to provide ‘front line’ library staff with training, technology tools and techniques to effectively and efficiently meet patron needs. ISL consultants Karen Egan and Gwen Harrison will shortly begin organizing a conference planning committee. Library Annual Certification Website Now Online

We told you recently about a new process that takes effect January 2, under which all regional library system member libraries will complete a mandatory annual online library certification. The State Library’s Annual Library Certification Website is now available at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/libraries/librarycertification.html.

Applications are now available for the 18th Small Public Library Management Institute (SPLMI).  Sponsored by the Illinois State Library and hosted by the University of Illinois Springfield, the Institute will be held June 2-7, 2013.  The weeklong Institute is intended for directors of small public libraries as well as directors of all sizes of libraries that are either new to their position or new to the Illinois library community.  Key goals of the Institute are to assist public library administrators in better understanding their roles and responsibilities as well as how to provide better service to their constituents.  Topics included for this year will range from legal and budgeting issues to policy development, innovative programs, building safety, leadership, customer service, and personnel.  In addition, there are numerous opportunities for idea-sharing, networking, and team projects.
