The Arrowhead Library System (ALS) is currently recruiting for a Director due to the retirement of the current Director.

ALS is a one-county federated library system headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin.  The goal of the ALS is to provide open access and library services to all Rock County residents as effectively and cost efficiently as possible.  Under the general direction of a 7-member Board, the Director exercises the day-to-day administrative responsibilities for the system and provides services as set forth by policies established by the Board of Directors.  The Director works with libraries in Beloit, Clinton, Edgerton, Evansville, Janesville, Milton and Orfordville.

The position is located in Janesville, Wisconsin.  The normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The requirements for the position are:

  • Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • At least five years of professional library experience which includes three years of supervisory experience and a variety of administrative responsibilities.
  • Experience in public libraries is required.
  • Experience in regional systems and/or other types of libraries is desirable.
  • Experience in technology planning is required.
  • A valid Wisconsin driver's license and the ability to attend various meetings throughout the county and regionally.

Rock County provides a place for everyone and is conveniently located in the southern part of the state within driving distance of Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago. The County’s Cities include Janesville, Beloit, Edgerton, Milton, Evansville, and Brodhead.  The City of Janesville serves as the County seat, is located in the County’s central portion, and is the largest municipality in the County with a population estimated at over 63,575 in 2010.  The County’s Villages include Clinton, Orfordville, and Footville.

The Cities of Janesville and Beloit both house substantial industrial sectors.  Health care service entities, including Mercy Health System Corporation of Janesville, St. Mary's Hospital/DeanCare Services and Beloit Memorial Hospital Incorporated employ a large segment of the County’s labor force. Various forms of government, including the County and the City of Janesville and Beloit school districts are major public employers in the County. Major private employers include: W. W. Grainger Inc., Walmart, Seneca Foods Corp., and New Frito Lay Inc.

The County’s many historic and cultural attractions include the City of Evansville historic district, Beloit College (an acclaimed liberal arts institution located in the City of Beloit) and the City of Janesville’s Rotary Botanical Gardens and Tallman House (an exceptional example of Italian villa style architecture from the mid 1850’s).  Additionally, the Cities of Janesville and Beloit have a combined symphony orchestra, as well as individual performing arts centers. 

The Rock County Fair and Riverfest are regional cultural celebrations held every summer in the Cities of Janesville and Beloit respectively.  These Cities both have extensive park and open space networks, including portions of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a Statewide trail commemorating the State’s geologic history. The County has 18 county parks, including Magnolia Bluff, home to a unique scenic overlook, which provide many recreational opportunities. The County’s main waterway, the Rock River, bisects the County from north to south, running from Lake Koshkonong in the north-central portion of the County, through the Cities of Janesville and Beloit.
