Interlibrary Loan/Reciprocal Borrowing Survey Deadline Extended

The deadline for completing the FY2011–2012 ILLINET Interlibrary Loan and Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey has been extended to December 31. The survey can be accessed on LibPAS for Illinois libraries at http://il.countingopinions.com. Library usernames and passwords to access the system are the same as used on the previous system.

2013 ILA Annual Conference Call for Programs

The theme for the 2013 ILA Annual Conference is Ignite!, with fire symbolizing the burning enthusiasm of our profession, the sparking and catching of ideas, and the untamed ambition of all those who seek to offer warm atmospheres, transforming ideas, and hot services to their communities.  Illinois library employees are proud to be trailblazers, consistently striving to spark new ideas for serving the burning needs of our communities.  Through kindled inspiration, connectivity and collaboration, we actively share our ideas, Ignite! the conversation and, in doing so, light a path for others.

 

The ILA Annual Conference Program Committee is seeking program proposals that focus on engaging your community, stimulating imagination, fostering creativity and ingenuity, sharing gifts and talents, and demonstrating leadership for libraries of every size and every type.  Whether you are an academic, special, school, or public librarian; a human resources, marketing, facilities, or law professional; or in a rural or city library serving a large or small population, we ask you to consider submitting a proposal.  Please consider collaborating and partnering with each other.

 

Information Literacy Summit

Bridging the Gap: Knowledge Creation, Information Literacy, and the Role of Technology in Education

Call for Proposals

We are seeking presenters to lead interesting and interactive discussions about information literacy and library instruction. We are especially interested in breakout sessions and panels related to this year's theme, Bridging the Gap: Knowledge Creation, Information Literacy, and the Role of Technology in Education. To offer multiple perspectives, we encourage all types of libraries, schools and other organizations to submit proposals.

In keeping with the Summit theme, we'd like to make explicit the connection between teaching and learning digital literacies and the use of technology to teach and learn. We are extending our call for proposals outside of the library community to educational technologists, instructional designers, and instructional technologists.

The Summit is a regional conference which will be held at three locations across Illinois. When submitting your proposal, please indicate the location(s) at which you'd like to present. If you wish to propose more than one breakout session, please fill out a form for each topic. Breakout sessions and panels will be 50 minutes long and should include audience interaction or discussion. Hands-on lessons and demonstrations (and/or practical takeaways) are encouraged. Sessions typically have 20-40 participants.

New Petition Filing Deadline for Board of Trustees:
December 26

It is official. The Governor has signed SB 3338 that changed the deadline for filing of petition for library Board of Trustees and other local officers from Christmas Eve, December 24 at 5 PM to December 26 at 5 PM. Note also that objections to petitions must be filed within "5 business days" after the new petition deadline of Dec. 26, so with the weekend and New Year's Day holiday, the objection deadline will be January 3.  ILA worked with other local government associations to get this bill passed. Thanks to all who contacted their legislators on this issue.
 

SHARE Update - 123 Days to Polaris! 

Many, many dates for the first Polaris class--QuickStart and Offline Circ--are now posted on L2. Member library staff are welcome to sign up for the location and time of their choice. To find the classes go to www.librarylearning.info and select LLSAP in the Categories drop down menu.
 
Work continues on dedup-ing bib records, adding profile information for each member library, a new SHARE website, and, of course, entering codes.

Call for Nominations - ILA Intellectual Freedom Award

Presented by the ILA Intellectual Freedom Committee and Quality Books, Inc., the Intellectual Freedom Award honors an individual or group for outstanding contributions in defending intellectual freedom or the advancement of these principles as espoused and promulgated by both the Illinois Library Association and the American Library Association.

The recipient will receive a $500 financial award and certificate.

All  Illinois school, academic, special, and public libraries, as well as, Illinois Library Systems, ILA and its forums and committees are encouraged to submit a nomination.  Any other Illinois group or individual may also submit nominations.

To submit a nomination, complete the nomination form, follow all the submission instructions, and attach all support statements, letters, and documentation, etc. required by the award’s criteria.  ILA must receive all nominations by May 15.  http://www.ila.org/awards/intellectual-freedom-award

ILEAD USA Applications Available

The State Library will host ILEAD USA (Innovative Librarians Explore, Apply and Discover): The 21st Century Technology and Leadership Skills Institute for the States at the University of Illinois Springfield on March 25–28, June 17–20 and October 21–24, 2013.

The ILEAD USA initiative, begun in 2009 by Illinois as ILEAD U, has now been propagated to partner states Colorado, Iowa, Ohio and Utah.

Illinois Library Laws and Rules

The last shipment of Illinois Library Laws & Rules (2012) were mailed out on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, to libraries that requested them so all libraries should have received their copies by Monday, December 3, 2012, at the latest. If you ordered books but did not receive them, contact Linda Petty. Extra copies were ordered and are available on a first come first serve basis. The books are $20/copy. An invoice will be in the package with the books. If you did not get in on the original order, but would like a copy of the Illinois Library Laws & Rules books, please contact Linda Petty at 618.656.3216, ext. 412.
 

SHARE Update  

With 427 SHARE libraries there are approximately 1,705 library staff members that will need to be trained when we convert to Polaris. We are currently determining training dates for QuickStart and Offline Circ sessions to be held at several locations throughout southern Illinois. In addition to this training we are also developing additional training methods such as a Train the Trainer program, where representatives from libraries will learn QuickStart and Offline Circ in a training session led by SHARE staff, and then will train their library staff in their building. A video presentation of the class will be available, beginning in January, for staff members who are unable to attend a computer lab session, or who prefer to learn in this manner. In addition, we are developing a variety of materials for libraries to use to assist them in using Polaris, including a Polaris manual, how to videos, and a how to flip chart

LibPAS Reports and Data Input Training

Lindsay Thompson of Counting Opinions will provide training on December 19, 2012, using LibPAS Reports, a secure web portal used for accessing collected data results for Illinois libraries. This comparative statistical tool will be accessible soon. Her training will also include a review of how to input data using the LibPAS system.

The FY2011–FY2012 ILLINET Interlibrary Loan and Reciprocal Borrowing Statistical Survey is now available online. The Library Performance Assessment System (LibPAS) is a web-based service used by library organizations to capture, consolidate, process, report and compare library performance metrics. LibPAS for Illinois libraries may be accessed at http://il.countingopinions.com. Library usernames and passwords to access the system are the same as used on the previous system. The deadline for completing the survey is November 30.
