Directors' Chat
Thursday, October 7, 2021

Anna Yackle IHLS :  “October is crisp days and cool nights, a time to curl up around the dancing flames and sink into a good book.” — John Sinor “In October, a maple tree before your window lights up your room like a great lamp. Even on cloudy days, its presence helps to dispel the gloom.” — John Burroughs

“October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins…. Merry October!” — Rainbow Rowell

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” — L.M. Montgomery Let’s spark up October and make it better than September. – unknown

The end of the summer is not the end of the world. Here’s to October… – A.A. Milne

The clear light that belongs to October was making the landscape radiant. – Florence Bone

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Hi Sandy, good to "see" you here.

Sandy West - RLCA:  How have you've been Anna?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Busy as always, how bout you Sandy?

Sandy West - RLCA:  Well that was a big network drop.  I was just typing that I joined to see if there was any new information from the fellow librarians.

Sandy West - RLCA:  I spend many a day just feeling useless in the LRC.  I can't purchase any print material, if it doesn't come with an e-resource too.  It's very tiring to just sit and have little to do.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  WE have been talking to people about better connectivity and trying to get all libraries better broadband.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Sandy, that sounds horrible and perhaps short sighted.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Sounds like possibly that dicison was made by people outside of the library who really don't understand the power of a good library.

Sandy West - RLCA:  Anna, I agree with you.  The board approved the budget, and the print line for the library remained as it was, but this is going on year 2 of no purchase without the e-book.  My administrator says it is because of the region 5 Covid numbers, that we could turn fully remote at a moments notice, so we should not purchase items that would have no way of getting used.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  We have an amazing Member Matter  coming up October 21. Think Forward, Not Straight: Understanding the LGBTQ+ Spectrum presented by Jayne Walters, MLIS Confused by the rapidly changing and expanding language? In this session, we’ll discuss the many shades of the LGBTQ+ rainbow and how versatile and fluid it can be. You’ll learn ways to navigate conversations while avoiding pitfalls and how to be a better ally. You’ll also learn why it’s so important.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Sorry here is the link

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Sandy, I looked at the numbers this morning and they're getting much better than they were a month ago.

Sandy West - RLCA:  Agree again, that those that don't use and understand the amount of resources we could have, astounds me.  I am glad that ILL is available.  Students are able to get their wanted/needed items.

Sandy West - RLCA:  @Ellem. that is wonderful to see.  Maybe once the spring semester begins, I'll be able to spend some funds.

Sandy West - RLCA:  The SHARE app is my new favorite tool!!!!

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Sandy,  I am sorry you are in such a frustrating position. Just remember you know what you are doing and you do an excellent job.  This too shall pass.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  The new SHARE app is a great way to kick off this chat.  Lot's of positive chatter on the listserv this morning.  I'm excited!

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Everyone is enchanted with the new APP, I will have to try it myself.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Hopefully more people will join us. Are numbers are smaller than usual today. Maybe people are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  I think that people tend to trickle in for the first several minutes.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Bobbi, congratulations on heading up another successful Director's University.

Kami Komm - Germantown:  Thank you to all of you that were involved in Director's University.  I learned so much and felt like I made some new friends.  :-)

Bobbi Perryman - Vespasian Warner PLD:  Thanks! I think it went  very well. Full credit to Kate Hall for spearheading it.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Kami, I am so pleased you found it so very useful.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  I didn't realize the Share App was live, should I have gotten an email about that , or is there a place I need to check regularly? (Sorry, I'm new)

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  Grant Award Letter received from IL State Library! Check your emails!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Darcy, it's a soft launch for library staff.  We can get the information to you by the end of this afternoon.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Ellen, thank you

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  Here's the link to find more info

Danielle Beasley - Communications Coordinator:  Hi Darcy! If you are signed up to receive emails from us, then you should have gotten an email about the SHARE Mobile Library soft launch. This is NOT being promoted to patrons yet. We are asking libraries to test the app first before the hard launch to patrons later this month.

Sherry Waldrep - Allerton PL:  Quick question about how long to keep expired patron records.  We have about 1500 inactive patrons - I haven't looked at them, I'm sure some are expired w/no fines and others have fines which is why there are still in the system. Wondering if it's time to clean out

Bobbi Perryman - Vespasian Warner PLD:  I get rid of old patron records after three years.

Diana Donahoo_CentraliaRLD:  We received our grant award letter today via email. We got the one for resources for local workforce.

Bobbi Perryman - Vespasian Warner PLD:  I keep ones with fines over $25. All others get deleted.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Great!  It will be good to see the complete list of system recipients!

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I want to take this opportunity to ask all of you to encourage your trustees to attend IHLS Member Day on November 19.  We have a full day of programs for them. Besides for the excellent and inspiring opening and closing sessions we have three programs for them spread across the day. One regards the relationship between the board and the director, one is a mock board meeting, and one is succession planning.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Danielle, who would I be signed up with if I'm signed up?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Sorry, member day is NOVEMBER 18

Danielle Beasley - Communications Coordinator:  You would be signed up for our newsletter:

Danielle Beasley - Communications Coordinator:  From that list, you can check what emails you'd like to receive from IHLS/SHARE/CMC

Bill from the Brehm Library:  What's the link for signing up?

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  What are yo signing up for, Bill?

Danielle Beasley - Communications Coordinator:  Hi Bill, if you're asking about the link for Member Day, sign up here through L2:

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Thanks Danielle, I had just gone into L2 to retrieve the link.

Danielle Beasley - Communications Coordinator:  You're welcome, Anna!

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Darcy, how are you finding being a new director? Is there anything you would like to ask the group?

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Anna, I'm really enjoying it, I have a marvelous staff! I'm spending a lot of time trying to figure what it is, that I don't know about... Our previous director left suddenly.

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  I've been waiting for the results of the grant awards.  Were libraries who were awarded the Transforming Spaces grant notified yet?  Is there anyone on this chat who received this grant award?

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  I am disappointed to not be able to attend Member Day this year.  My son is getting married on November 20 and I will be traveling on the 18th.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  That's a pretty good reason, Jo!    Any of your trustees or other staff members are more than welcome to participate!

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  I'm very curious about what other libraries are using their Illinois Humanities Covid-19 Emergency Relief and Recovery Grants for

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Darcy, I am glad to hear it. Remember you are not alone. IHLS staff is always ready to help you and we have this source and the IHLS Director's listserev to get help from all of our wonderful directors.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Anna, thank you

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Ellen, my head librarian will attend.  Trying to talk Board members into attending ...

Diana Donahoo_CentraliaRLD:  @Kathleen we applied for the transformng spaces also but I haven't received anything about that one.

Sharla Riley~ Doyle Public Library:  Agree with Kami, Director's University has given me so many more tools to work with to better communicate with board and staff! Thank you all!

Cassandra Thompson, IHLS:  @Darcy, we sent out an email yesterday. You might want to update your newsletter preferences to include SHARE Official Business. for more info!

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  My IL State Grant was on the road to recovery

Sherry Waldrep - Allerton PL:  how do get more info about Director's University?

Cassandra Thompson, IHLS:  Sorry! Here's the link to update newsletters.

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  IL Humanities Grant I am using half of my grant funds to raise my Patron Services Staff from $12.00 to $13..00 per hour

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  I'm up for Director's Universiy

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Jo, I am very sorry you won't be attending.  @Sherry, next spring I will be sending you all of the details about registering and all of the details about the event. Hopefully it will be in person .

Sherry Waldrep - Allerton PL:  @Anna - glad to hear- I've heard great things about it!

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Janet, that is  a good idea, how many staff do you have?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Janet, I know the Humanities grant was pretty bold but I have never seen a grant that allows you to use it for staff raises but under the surrent circumstance with COVID it makes sense.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Sherry, it is wonderful. When the Illinois State Library used to run it we would have an event at the state library with a chocolate fountain. No such extravagance these days, just lots of good learning.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Janet, I meant broad not bold.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I wish every library could be awarded more money to help with payroll. You are very resourceful Janet to think of that

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Dena Porter just posted the information about the new App on the Director's Listserv, so there's an additional resource.

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  I've asked my Village to share their ARPA funds with me.  I sent them a 3 page document. Wish me LUCK!

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  Ours is a General Operating grant that the previous director applied for .  The previous director had only spelled out some specific technology expenditures but when I contacted IL Humanities,  they said that  the technology grant was a separate grant that we did not get. So I'm starting from scratch Janet McAllister - Rochester:  @Darcy - that means almost anything!

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  I don't know how to access the director's listserv... is it on L2 ?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  What priority would you give to each of these three things: 1. Better connectivity and broadband  2. Better funding or  3. Better Services from the state and systems ?  How would you rank them?

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Darcy, we'll make sure you get added to that.  Give us a day or two.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Ellen, Thank You

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Anna - 2, 1, 3

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  @ Diana thanks for letting me know - perhaps there is hope yet?

Sherry Waldrep - Allerton PL:  @Anna  - hard choices!  3, 2, 1

Anna Yackle IHLS :  @Jo, thank you. Anyone else?

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Janet... I feel like it should be something important since it's "Covid Relief money" I don't wan to do anything frivolous, LOL

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  2,3,1

Kami Komm - Germantown:  @Anna - 2,1,3

Diana Donahoo_CentraliaRLD:  @Anna 2,3,1

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Thanks Sherry, I agree we all want all three but I want to know how you, our directors prioritiae it.

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  @Anna-- 2, 3, 1

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Does anyone have anything they would like to add to my list?

Don, Philo:  3,1,2

Bobbi Perryman - Vespasian Warner PLD:  2, 3, 1

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Many of you put 3 as first or second, what specific services would you like to see?

Bobbi Perryman - Vespasian Warner PLD:  I know that the state has limited what systems can do, but consulting would be great to have back.

Bill from the Brehm Library:  2, 3, 1

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I visited some of the libraries on the crawl and I want to shout out to Sparta for the reward of Hand sanitizer and candy and Coulterville for the sweet, sweet cookbook. I was hoping to do more than  the few I managed but there is always this weekend. I have to say it was really fun.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Have any of you participated in the library crawl?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Bobby, I agree. I wish we could provide a much more robust service.  When I worked at another system and had fewer libraries, I really got to know them and most of the people who worked in them. It was eadier to anticipate needs and services.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  that should be easier.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  What are all of you working on this week?

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  Our Up  All Night Reading challenge on Beanstack went live this week... trying to get more participants...

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  What's involved with the challenge, Darcy?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Darcy tell us a little more about that project. It sounds like fun.

Kami Komm - Germantown:  Planning our Family Reading Night.  I hope to have a storytime and crafts.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  We picked 4 genres Mystery, Sci-Fi,  Fantasy, Thriller... for each genre you read  you win a small prize and are entered into a grand prize drawing for a gift basket

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  Ages 14 and up

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Ellen, our next story walk goes up on the 18th.  Trying to get pages put together, questions typed, everything laminated, and velcro attached to the pages.

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  I am weeding as we are on the tail end of a book sale.  I am hoping to get some of the deleted books out of the door.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  If any of you would like to share your ideas about your needs with me via one-on-one email or phone. my email address is or 618-619-2096

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Kathleen, that's a great fall project!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  If anyone needs it, here's the link for Family Reading Night:

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  We have a spring and a fall book sale.  The community is very supportive.  The money goes towards programming costs so it is a win-win situation.

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  Our book sale was postponed until next month by "the Friends of the Library"  books are everywhere,..  has anyone donated to Better World Books?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I love all of the programs and activities. Do you all hand out candy for Halloween?

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  We hand out candy - young and old appreciate a small sweet:)

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  We hand out books for Halloween

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  We bought candy from Kiwanis... two birds with one stone...

Kami Komm - Germantown:  Our Kindergarten and First grade students trick or treat around the town and make a stop at the library.  :-)  I got tootsie pops this year.

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Anna, yes, we are handing out candy on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (28-30)

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  @Esther, I love that!

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I love seeing the kids and adults in costume

Diana Donahoo_CentraliaRLD:  @Anna We do a Books for Treats event. Ages birth thru 6th grade. It will include handouts-activity pages, no candy.

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  We are also celebrating National M&M day on October 13.  A local bank gave us $$ to purchase snack size bags of M&Ms to hand out to patrons that day.

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  @Jo----that's something to celebrate!!!!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  :-)

Sherry Waldrep - Allerton PL:  We are partnering with the Chamber for a Chamber Safe Trick or Treat. The program kicks off at 3pm at the library with a story and craft. Then kids trick/treat to participating businesses in town.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  I love the handing out of books. @Esther, I always remember finding my calico tortie  in front of your library around this time 3 years ago, She has lots of orange and black in her fur. We also put a bow on Annabelle.

Esther Curry--CE Brehm Memorial PLD:  @Anna--very sweet!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  We celebrated Do Something Nice Day on the 5th.  Everyone who came in could pick an envelope that had an amount (ranging from $0.15 to $5) that they could apply to fines on their account, or put it toward future fines, or they could pay it forward to someone else.  We were delighted in how many people chose to "Do Something Nice" and paid it forward.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Oh Jo that is so heartwarming and what a great idea.

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  - if you are in our area stop by and see us!

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Anna, it was heartwarming.  Just what we needed in this tough time.

Bill from the Brehm Library:  We did our local Fall Festival and had 1300 people come by the booth.

Jo Keillor - Greenville Public Library:  @Bill - Wow!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  That a lot of people, Bill!  Did you have giveaways?

Anna Yackle IHLS :  Sounds like so much fun Janet and Bill tht is great community outreach.

Kathleen Bennett - Catlin Public:  @ Janet - Your fall festival looks like a terrific community event.  I hope you have a lot of participants:)

Janet McAllister - Rochester:  Last year was our first year and we had 1200 - this year is two day event :)

Darcy Wallace Watseka Public Library 2:  We are up tp 96 followers on instagram!  and I need to go, thanks for the chat!

Bill from the Brehm Library:  We had a free game for the kids. Spin the wheel and win a prize with every kid winning at least a piece of candy if not also a small toy. Then we handed out promotional materials to the adults.

Anna Yackle IHLS :  It has been a great discussion and I look forward to next week. Have a great weekend and enjoy the changing leaves.

Sharla Riley~ Doyle Public Library:  Bill, that sounds like such fun!

Ellen Popit/IHLS:  Perfect timing, Darcy!  Thanks, Bill!   Looking forward to next week's chat!
