Vaccine clinics to be held at library system locations in Carbondale, Champaign and Edwardsville
Sneak a peek inside Illinois Heartland Library System this December while you get your first, second, or booster COVID-19 vaccine. Illinois Heartland, also known as IHLS, is one of the three library systems in Illinois that serve the public, school, academic, and special libraries in Illinois -- likely including your library.
Six free vaccine/booster clinics are planned to be held across the system’s three locations -- Carbondale, Champaign, and Edwardsville -- in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health. All clinics are open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome, but vaccine seekers are strongly encouraged to sign up ahead of time (where available) to ensure enough doses are available.
Clinics are scheduled as follows:

Interlibrary loan is handled differently in Illinois than in most states.
“In Illinois, residents can use their public library cards to access materials from almost any other public library in the state,” said Shandi Greve Penrod, marketing coordinator for Illinois Heartland. “On top of that, most public libraries in central and southern Illinois belong to SHARE, the largest automated library consortium in North America. That makes it easy for member libraries’ patrons to borrow from literally millions of books, movies, and other items. Illinois Heartland’s couriers are the ones who then sort and transport those items to the borrowing patron’s home library. Illinois interlibrary loan is a case study for other states, and that’s pretty special,” Greve Penrod said.
Since Illinois Heartland Library System serves the librarians rather than the public directly, the average person doesn’t get to see inside the system’s buildings, Greve Penrod explained.
“While we are unable to hold tours, I think it will be interesting for those who want a vaccine to also get a glimpse inside the facilities that makes Illinois’ model interlibrary loan system possible,” Greve Penrod said.
COVID-19 vaccine and booster appointments are also available at other locations across the state. Find other vaccine opportunities by visiting coronavirus.illinois.gov or calling 1-833-621-1284.
