Digital Equity Grant Co-Design for Libraries
Thursday, July 11, 10:30 a.m.–noon
As part of the federal Digital Equity Act, Illinois is receiving over $30 million to support technology programs such as device distribution, digital skill building, digital navigation, and digital equity coalition building. The Illinois Office of Broadband (IOB) is actively seeking input from library staff to help shape the state's Digital Equity Grant Program, ensuring it meets the needs of libraries and the communities they serve. To this end, IHLS and RAILS are hosting an online meeting with the IOB to help gather that input, and our members are invited!
This initiative aims to harness the insights and expertise of those on the frontlines of community assistance to craft a grant program that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of Illinois' diverse communities. Especially encouraged to participate are library staff members who have experience in facilitating or engaging in community programs aimed at benefiting vulnerable populations. By contributing to the co-design of this grant, library staff have a unique opportunity to influence how these substantial funds will be utilized to foster digital inclusion and equity.
Making Your Website More Accessible
Wednesday, July 24, 10–11 a.m.
The significance of website accessibility is growing as organizations recognize the legal implications of having a website that isn’t usable by people with disabilities. The requirements for websites under the Americans with Disabilities Act are just as important as the accessibility requirements for buildings. In fact, by April 2026, most public libraries will need to be fully compliant. So, while completely rebuilding a website to meet accessibility standards may not always be immediately feasible, it's essential to take proactive steps.
Join IHLS and RAILS for a one-hour introductory webinar led by Laura Solomon, former Web Applications Manager for Cleveland Public Library. During this webinar, we'll provide valuable insights into the legal landscape and actionable strategies to enhance your website's accessibility in the short term. Find out what “web accessibility” actually covers and which legal standards apply to library websites. You'll learn concrete changes you can implement right away, and take away at least three changes you can to make to ensure your website is more accessible.
