Library HR Webinar Series

IHLS has partnered with the human resource experts at HR Source to bring IHLS members a series of webinars on important HR topics. Join us for one or all.

HR Source sessions typically range in cost from $35 to $250, but these webinars are only $10 each for all IHLS-member libraries—or $25 for all three.

Each session is limited to 60 participants, and each participant must register individually for each session by 5 p.m. two days prior to each session. Cancellations must also be made by 5 p.m., two days prior to each session; no cancellations or refunds will be accepted after this date. However, registration can be transferred with at least 24 business hours of notice. Zoom links and any session materials will be sent to registrants approximately one week before each webinar.
Sessions will be recorded and available to registrants for seven days after the live webinar.

Crisp, Clear & Concise
A Formula for Effective Communication

April 13, 2022
Wednesday
11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

“I need you to stop what you are doing right now and get this done!” “You are always yelling in your emails.” “You never listen to me.” “I need that report ASAP.” How often have you heard these statements in your organization? The result is always the same: increased pressure, confusion, and frustration. Ever-changing technology and diversity in styles, personalities, and generations in the workplace make it seem like effective communication is a lost cause. But appropriate, respectful communication that develops positive employee relationships is essential for overall organizational success. Let us help your staff adapt their
communication style to optimize results in every interaction with each individual they encounter in the successful performance of their daily duties.

Topics covered in this session include:

  • Assessing your communication skills and applying a basic communication model to improve everyday communication;
  • Addressing the importance of adopting an assertive communication style;
    rather than our often “go-to” styles of passive, aggressive, or worse, passive-aggressive;
  • Cultivating listening competencies to enhance the communication process;
  • Reviewing business communication etiquette; and
  • The importance of body language and tone in conveying a consistent, respectful message.

The session is interactive, and participation is encouraged.

  • How to review tasks and decide which can be delegated;
  • Recognizing skills and talents of the individuals supervised;
  • Selecting the right people for assignments; and

The session is interactive, and participation is encouraged.

Legal Issues for Supervisors

June 22, 2022
Wednesday
10 - 11:30 a.m.

Are your supervisors familiar with basic employment laws? If not, they could be placing the organization at risk for legal liability. More often than not, it is the supervisor's words and actions that are at issue in a legal proceeding. Educate your supervisors and managers to reduce potential liability.

Topics covered in this session include:

  • The concept of at-will employment and what the term really means;
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA);
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA);
  • Harassment and discrimination;
  • The importance of documenting employees' actions and documentation guidelines every organization should follow;
  • The basics of various wage and hour laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); and
  • Practical application and implementation of the laws supervisors commonly
    encounter.

The session is interactive, and participation is encouraged.
